Devlog for "Finish Your Game" Jam - New crafting recipes


During the "Finish Your Game" Jam 2024 I was implementing crafting recipes for new items, buildings and weapons.

NEW WEAPONS AND BUILDINGS

Improvised Whip

The whip is a new improvised weapon with rather little damage. However, when targeting a certain enemy, it will also hit all adjacent enemies. Which makes it a formidable weapon against hostile animals, which tend to have little HP but come in larger numbers.

Fishing rod

With a fishing rod equiped, players can use the additional action "Fish" on the Jetty. I might also add a bait option later on, allowing to lure specific species of fish. The rod is loosing durability each time a fish got caught. The fish can be cut for meat and bones.

The new Bone Hook item is needed to craft a fishing rod.

Barricade (Preview)

This new building will offer a strategic option for preparing battles against larger numbers of zombies. Barricades built in the direct surrounding of a battle offer a decent amount of protection as well as dealing some passive damage to attacking enemies. Their durability is reduced each time they got hit by an enemie attack. Similar to fireplaces, barricades are static buildings which can't be moved.

NEW ITEMS

Rope

A rope will be needed for most of the following reciptes. It can be found in tool sheds or can be crafted from 2 straw wheets.

Bone Hook

The hook can be carved out of bones using a knife. It is needed to craft a fishing rod.

EASIER TUTORIAL RUN

There were quite a lot of players in the past, asking for a more favorable tutorial run. To address this demand, I added a crate and an axe right at the starting point of the game. Players now have a really good weapon at hand right from the beginning, and they will find some  useful items in the crate.

WHAT ELSE

  • All new weapons will inherit the existing concepts (improving attack and defense values, repairing weapons).
  • For each new item there will be a dedicated page in the Almanac. I might also add a new tutorial card, explaining the benefit of building barricades.
  • All recipes will be available by a new prev/next navigation within the crafting dialog.
  • Complete refactoring of all the action related source codes - extensive playtesting afterwards.

Unrelated to everything mentioned before, the Game Editor now offers an option to select/jump to a certain day. It helps me during development and might also be a (temporary) feature some players find helpful when time is running out.
