Our protagonist Theodosia is a resourceful, but not especially scrupulous young woman who’s enjoying her single life when she gets the news that her father’s accumulated tens of thousands of pounds in gambling debt. In order to avoid having her house taken away (especially her precious prized rose garden!) she decides to try to find a suitable match as quickly as possible.

While Theodosia’s personality is not completely set due to the choices you can make, there are some general guiding principles to follow. She’s not exactly a sociopath (and is even capable of caring about other creatures at times, particularly her beloved dachshunds), but she’s definitely in a fairly ruthless mode in this story: her aim is to get married for money and security, and love comes in a distant third. She has few qualms about lying or manipulating others, and while she doesn’t actively try to destroy people’s lives without cause, she can and probably will retaliate if someone slights her. She wouldn’t be your best friend in real life, but the game is pretty light-toned in general; Theodosia may be a bit of a jerk, but in the end she’s just trying to survive The Regency.


The game was originally made during a #summerslowjams event.
The theme was "Resource Management".

ITEMS

Items are not a resource of their own. They can be converted into coins (sell) or into tokens (break).



Tokens are the most important and versatile resource. Options can require tokens (the normal or cursed version) to be selectable. Tokens are limited and vital for progressing through the story/game. Using cursed tokens triggers negative effects.


VISITING LOCATIONS

Each visit “consumes” one time of the day and shifts to the next one. Possible locations depend on the time of the day. Each have their own price, with walking the park and taking a nap being the free ones. Players can get one-time-tickets and/or invitations through certain dialog options.

MEETING PEOPLE

Players meet random people while visiting locations. Depending on the location, the chance for meeting certain people might vary - all of them have their preferred locations. Players can meet specific people when following invitations. Each meeting triggers a dialog offering choices/options.

INSPIRATIONS

Gameplay and mechanics got inspired by titles like Sorcery! 2 and Pick & Poke.

The game is entirely hand-crafted with ♥ and passion. We developed the novel concept and story from scratch, the art is hand-drawn by Tiny Bard using Procreate.

All the coding was done without any framework starting from zero.
~4.500 lines of code utilizing the full potential of the webtech stack - native HTML, CSS and JavaScript and a lot of conventions to piece the story markup together according to the players interactions and choices.

I loved this! One of my favorite games of the Jam. Using emotions/vibes as currency is a fun concept that definitely fits with the Jam's theme. Lots of games have a "you can do this if your something level is over 10" but a "you can do this if you have a something token" changes things a lot. I'd love to see more of this game, and more games in general with this kind of dynamic!
